Sculptor / Sculpture ?
I’m Phil. I live on a nondescript street, on the outskirts of a small city, on an amazingly vibrant planet, suspended, as if by magic, in the blackness of space. By that, I mean Prince George, B.C., Canada.
I create symbols. I might use concrete, a canoe, a washing machine, a roll of packaging tape, a bible, a poem, a song, a spoon, a fork — you get the idea. And the truth is that it really excites me.
A fork becomes a symbol of appetite, desire, hunger, nourishment? Wow! Packaging tape transforms into a life-sized figure of a crucified Christ? Crikey! Carve a poem into a canoe? Consider the potential! And that’s what it’s all about for me, exploring that potential.
If anything is going to solve the world’s problems it’s going to come from our creative, innovative, and imaginative core. I owned a garage but, decades ago, I screwed metal letters onto it that spelled the words “Concreate Studio.” Voilà! Instantly it became something new — a place to experiment with materials, objects, methods, and ideas.
If I’m not working in the studio, I opt for the quieter things — hiking, biking, canoeing, gardening, and cross-country skiing. Mostly because I love listening to the birds.
